The Truth About How To Get a Job
By Anna Johnson
Wondering how to get a job in today's job market?
Well, here's a little-acknowledged fact about getting a job: just over 50% of all new jobs go to "Insiders" – existing employees or people referred to a company by its employees?
In other words, people who have a pre-existing, positive relationship with a company - whether they work in the company or are known, liked and trusted by someone within the company - have a much better chance of getting a job than anyone else.
The same could be said about business in general – that most business goes to individuals or companies that already have a positive relationship with an organization.
In fact, in some cases, it's probably more like 70%, 80% or even 90%!
You might think this is unfair... but it's actually logical.
Wouldn't you rather do business with someone you know, like and trust than with someone you don't know, like or trust?
Of course, that doesn't help you much if you're an Outsider – if you DON'T know anyone inside the company - and you're wondering how to get a job with them!
So what do you do if you're an "Outsider"?
Well, you can try to be the best Outsider you possibly can be, and follow the various conventional "Outsider" approaches to getting a job.
For example, you could follow the standard advice for getting a job and search the job listings on a jobs website or in the newspaper, then send in your cover letter and resume, and hope you get an interview.
But who are you kidding?
How will you get the job when you're competing against someone the company already knows or wants for the position?
In other words, you can be an Outsider all you want... you can be the best Outsider possible... but if you're competing against an Insider you'll have a much lower chance of getting the job.
All right, so how do you tilt the odds in your favor?
Well, you aim to become an Insider in addition to using conventional methods to get the job. And even where you follow convention, you use certain "Insider strategies" to give yourself an edge.
